I LOVE Miami and will miss all the amazing things that south Florida has to offer, but I'm excited that this next move is permanent. I'll be building a home there, as opposed to being a nomad. Hopefully I'll have more to blog about too! It's hard settling into a home with sea foam green and orange walls (Go Dolphins?). I'm looking forward to actually getting to be creative in my space. Stay tuned!Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17639410115664066619noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1546380038426554981.post-10061437371148731082012-10-01T10:34:00.000-07:002012-10-01T10:34:31.718-07:00I'm a Really Bad BloggerI don't know why I continue to barely maintain this blog. I think it would be so fun to have a blog of all the little things that make me smile in my life. Maybe it's make-up, jewelry, my sweet puppy, whatever. But sometimes the business of life tends to get in the way. We'll see what happens.Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17639410115664066619noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1546380038426554981.post-60359272716249360172012-08-13T09:03:00.001-07:002012-08-13T09:03:28.649-07:00Homemade Artisan Bread that Doesn't SuckI love bread. I could eat a nice loaf of french bread in a sitting (my waistline doesn't appreciate it). And while we had a great place to get great bread in Charlottesville called Albemarle Baking Company that didn't use any corn ingredients, we have yet to find a place like that here.

In fact, it's been a challenge finding bread at all. The ONLY bread at Whole Foods that didn't have a corn ingredient was in the freezer section, which meant we wouldn't have that soft, fluffy bread.

And then they stopped carrying it last week.

What were we supposed to do without bread? What would Ryan eat for breakfast? What would be a quick and easy lunch substitute for sandwiches? What would we take with us to eat with cheese and fruit on the beach?

I'm a pretty good baker, but we've never tried making THAT kind of bread. I make a mean pumpkin bread, but french bread? Sandwich bread?

So we spent a good part of our free time this week making bread. We tried making baguettes from the recipe on the King Arthur bread. They turned out... hard. We tried making soda bread. That turned out gross. And then I tried a recipe for rosemary, lemon, garlic bread that I found online.

For the record, I would NOT suggest putting lemon in this bread. But the bread part turned out WONDERFUL. I was shocked. I never ever thought I could so easily make bread like this at home. It's no Albemarle Baking Company, but it's just as good as any french bread you get at a regular store.

I tried it again yesterday without the lemon, garlic, and rosemary and it was even better!

The directions are simple:

Combine 3 cups bread flower, 1 3/4 tsp salt, 1/2 tsp yeast, and 1 1/2 cups water in a standing mixer with the bread hook attached. Mix until combined.

Cover bowl with a damp paper towel and leave overnight. The original recipe said to leave it 12-18 hours, but I left mine for 13 hours since it's so hot and humid here.

About 30 minutes before you are ready to bake, preheat the oven to 450. Place a dutch oven in the oven for 30 minutes to heat up. Then pull it out, scoop the dough in, put the lid back on, and bake for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, pull the lid off and continue baking for 15 minutes. After the 15 minutes are up, pull it out of the oven and put it in a rack to cool. Then you're done! SO EASY.

So the other day when I casually mentioned I wanted a chunky gold bracelet because people down here are serious about jewelry, he decided to get it for me.

See the cute packaging?
I just felt like I wasn't getting great products. Every month I'd see blogs about these people getting amazing things, and I'd change my beauty preferences, and every month I felt like my things weren't as good. I held on so long because I figured $10 wasn't so bad and every month I got one thing that I LOVED.

But I had kind of a bad experience with their customer service this month and just kind of felt like that was the last straw.

So I joined Glossybox. And I got my first one today. And I LOVE it.

Inside my Glossybox was:

Pedix Heel Rescue Balm

Color Ignite Multi Tone Shampoo

Color Ignite Multi Tone Conditioner

Lip, Face & Body Balm

Mineral Eye Shadow trio

Blushed fragrance towelette

So far, I've tied the Heel Rescue Balm and the Lip, Face & Body Balm.

The heel balm is great because my feet are being destroyed. All the walking the dog in my sandals in the heat is ruining my feet. It smells a little minty and while I've only used it a few days, it works great. Another foot cream I like is the one AHAVA puts out, and this one is about the same price and smells better.

The Lip, Face & Body Balm I've only used on my lips. It's corn free and completely organic so I can use it and kiss HB. It's nothing special - just lip balm, and a little unsolid for me, but I love the whole not-corn thing.

Also, you can smell the frangrance towelette from outside the container. I don't know why vanilla is such a popular scent right now, but this also smells like Aria hotel. It does smell a little bit better than some of the BirchBox perfumes I've smelled. I'm curious about how a towelette would work... would it be too much fragrance?

Overall, I'm pretty happy with the box. The only thing I don't think I will use is the eye shadow, but we'll see. It may just be too hot during the summer down here to wear it, but I might be happy to have it in winter.Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17639410115664066619noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1546380038426554981.post-70494841849063883212012-07-13T12:11:00.002-07:002012-07-13T12:11:55.129-07:00Separation Between Work and HomeI have trouble separating my work and home life, and I think most people can understand the feeling. It's gotten worse since I started working from home. How do you end the work day when there is still work to be done and you don't have to leave because the office closes. I can just do some in the evening, or do some while HB cooks.. Just checking my email turns into spending an hour updating and completing tasks. I was supposed to work in my office, which would have meant I could shut the door at the end of the day, but since I have the puppy, and she isn't allowed in the office, we sit in the living room all day, where I should be relaxing AFTER work.

When I was watching The Office the other night, I saw this.

I LOVE the idea of having an end-of-the-day ritual that helps me separate my time between work and home life. I have a start of the date ritual (reading Yahoo News), so I need to think of an end of the day one. Maybe a song I sing, a walk with the puppy, a video I watch, reading a chapter of a book, a special cocktail (or mocktail if I'm going out later) that I indulge in. I'll have to think of the best way to separate the two, and it will most definitely involve turning off the computer :).Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17639410115664066619noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1546380038426554981.post-28353825945165158292012-07-02T16:40:00.002-07:002012-07-02T16:40:57.862-07:00Leaving Cville: No RegretsSometimes when you leave a place, break up with someone, stop doing an activity, you tend to have better memories of that thing than there actually were. It's why people get back together with their exes so often (and break up with them again).
Last week I went back to Charlottesville for work. And I instantly remembered all things I DIDN'T like about it. Granted, there are things I miss. You can be in wide open spaces in a matter of minutes. There are hip eateries all over. The people are really into living there. But I wasn't one of those people, so I'm glad I left.
That being said I did have a lovely trip there. I got to see some friends, eat at Citizen Burger (their vegan burger is made with quinoa and red beets - I'm going to try to replicate that at home), and goof around with my coworkers. All in all, a successful trip.Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17639410115664066619noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1546380038426554981.post-22912418889731962002012-06-26T17:26:00.000-07:002012-06-26T17:26:04.708-07:00Miami Nail ColorOne thing I love about South Florida is that there are tons of bright colors everywhere. People aren't afraid to be bright and bold and that's reflected in everything from wall color to nail color.
The other day I went to get my nails done, and I fell in love with this color: Turquoise and Caicos

This color is REALLY popular here. I've seen it on several women. It looks great on all skin tones. So I had to have it. And I love it. My toes are painted in this color and I think it's so fun. I was going to post a picture of my feet but I was in a rush to paint them today before going out of town and decided no to.Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17639410115664066619noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1546380038426554981.post-48608219061660122422012-06-01T16:25:00.000-07:002012-07-06T05:30:02.154-07:00The newest addition...Meet Penny.
I've needed new clothes for a while...but I keep telling myself I won't buy them until I lose the weight. I've been living in the same two tank tops and lightweight skirts for about a week now. I need to buy some lightweight clothes to get through the scorching summer. Below is my Miami fashion wishlist for the summer.
I've always been interested in why people and cultures gravitate towards certain things, and that's what this was all about. I would be interested to see how these Darwinian theories applied to beauty and why we thing some women are more beautiful than others. Are there certain qualities that every culture find beautiful?Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17639410115664066619noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1546380038426554981.post-59932289653386078132012-05-26T05:54:00.004-07:002012-05-26T05:54:50.827-07:00Welcome to Miami

Charlottesville is an interesting little town. We've been here 15 months, and there are things I love about it and things I hate. This post is about the things I love.

The staff and food at Tavola

This would have been our go-to date night just because it's the only place in town that HB hasn't had a reaction from (meaning their food really is fresh and prepared right!). Thankfully the great food was always accompanied with stellar service and a great ambiance.

The history
HB and I both love history, and the Charlottesville area has had plenty for us to go do and see.

Fridays after Five
Friday's after Five is such a fun little event. It's a great free date and Charlottesville is small enough that you don't have to deal with crowds. Also, the people watching is fantastic.
I think I have to throw out the idea that fun has to involve doing something high-energy and might involve anything I find enjoyable. So today I decided to do something I enjoy - get my nails done!

Since moving to Charlottesville I've had a lot of problems trying to find somewhere to get my nails done. Some places are dirty, others people go to fast and do a bad job, and some don't listen. I decided to try Happy Nails up on the 29 and I'm so glad I did! I finally discovered a place that is clean, gives a great pedicure, and knows how to put on a set of acrylic nails. They went really slow, which visibly bothered some people who were there, but I didn't mind. I'd rather them go slow and do a good job. Besides, it's more time for me to relax.

One thing I like about getting my nails done is that it's some sort of "primping" that HB doesn't hate. HB hates when girls wear too much makeup, do too much to their hair, wear too much perfume, wear lip gloss, etc. So sometimes I find it hard to get a little dolled up. But he likes the acrylic nails and the pedicures. So it's my excuse to get them as often as possible :).

When I was at Happy Nails, they were showing damage from the tornadoes on the TV screen, and it made me realize how lucky I am. Sure, we all have problems, some bigger than others, but I just felt thankful and sorry for those that lost everything.Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17639410115664066619noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1546380038426554981.post-44285278390295492392012-03-01T18:24:00.002-08:002012-07-06T05:31:52.003-07:00Fun-Filled March Begins!

The end of February last night marked the end of my month of romance, and HB and I decided to end it with a date night to celebrate leap day. We went to Tavola, as per usual.

February didn't go as well as I thought it would. We didn't have a date night one week, and we didn't eat at the table every night we had dinner together. I don't know if it was a combination of things (HB's crazy schedule, stress at work, life, etc.), but every time we did do these things I had fun and felt a little more connected. We did start playing board games once a week, which was a really nice change from parking ourselves in front of the TV.

I think we will continue to eat dinner at the table as often as we want to. I'm not going to try to make it an every night mandatory thing, but it was an easy way to connect after a long day. I also think we will continue having date night weekly (or try) and continue to do game night a few nights a month. Sometimes date night can be as simple as getting coffee and taking a stroll - something that only takes 30 min and $5, and I have to remember that it doesn't have to mean a dinner or an entire day spent doing an activity.

With the start of March comes the start of my mission to have more fun. One of the core things that The Happiness Project talks about is having more fun, and I wanted to find a way to incorporate that into my resolutions this year. In my late teens and early twenties I felt like I had a lot more fun. I was more reckless and wild, would stay out late with friends, and was up for anything.

And then I grew up. I had rent, groceries, and bills to pay. I had to get a real job. And I feel like a lot of the fun in my life went out the window because it didn't match my new, responsible lifestyle. But there are other ways to have fun, and this month is all about grasping that.

One of the things Gretchen writes about is that what is fun for other people might not be fun for you, and that you really need to think about what fun means for you. I have no idea what fun means for me! I feel like a lot of the activities I enjoy aren't things I would consider fun. Reading or doing crosswords isn't FUN.

So far I only have three goals for March:

1. Start every day with a dance party.

2. Continue having weekly date nights.

3. Think of things that are fun, and do more of it.

I don't know if a marathon viewing of Downton Abbey counts, but if it does I've reached my goal today!

Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17639410115664066619noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1546380038426554981.post-10610219609163934362012-02-25T17:16:00.002-08:002012-02-25T17:16:59.984-08:00Stress and LifePart of the reason I set up my resolutions the way I did was because I knew I could only handle one resolution at a time. I wanted to improve my life and a teeny tiny bit per month sounded like the way to go.

But what about when one resolution is too much? This past month has been so stressful that I feel like I don't even have time for that much. I'm so exhausted that I just come home and watch bad TV. Bad because I've ran out of decent shows to watch. I just want something on in the background to zone out to.

I feel like I'm not the only one feeling this way. A lot of the women I work with are feeling similarly. Maybe it's the changing of the seasons? Maybe we are all rubbing stress off on each other?

I know that I just have to stick to trying to reach my goals. Eating healthy and exercising will give me more energy. Date nights are going to get me out of the house and improve my mood. And in March my resolution is to have more fun.

Whenever I'm feeling stressed, I reach for the comfort food. Unfortunately, this month I went dairy-free for some health reason. I don't have to be perfect, so I've decided that I can have cheesecake occasionally, small portions of the desserts I make at home, and a small amount of parmasean on my pasta.

So to comfort myself this weekend I made the biggest bowl of spaghetti possible. It's my favorite food ever. :)Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17639410115664066619noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1546380038426554981.post-51355696662333965252012-02-19T20:05:00.000-08:002012-07-05T15:47:05.845-07:00Snowy Weather

I'm still having trouble getting active again. While I've been eating healthier, I think my portion sizes are still a little out of control. I'm such a stress eater, and the second I have even a somewhat stressful minute, if there is food in front of me, I gobble it up. But who doesn't have stress in their lives?
Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17639410115664066619noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1546380038426554981.post-18353792092934970452012-02-17T13:16:00.000-08:002012-07-06T05:32:13.515-07:00An Update On My ResolutionsBy late January I'd lost 6 pounds (more than my goal of one pound per week, yay!) and was feeling fantastic about the way my body was looking. But then my grandfather died, I came back to a really stressful work situation, and I just started stress eating. And I'm having a really hard time stopping. With all the Valentine's cake and candy it's been really hard to say "no."

I can see the difference in my skin and feel the difference in my body. I feel less energetic, my skin is breaking out, and I feel bloated and nasty all the time. You'd think that would be enough to make me put down the chocolate.

With the start of February I began my second resolution, making my relationship with HB a little more romantic. We brought back the weekly date night, and we ALWAYS go to Tavola because HB doesn't have a reaction to the food. Last weekend there was a 2-hour wait time so we went to Mudhouse for coffee first. It's been really nice and really fun.

We've also started sitting at the table for dinner. Since we only eat together 4 out of every 8 nights, I feel like it's important to maximize that time together.

And, because I get OCD about things and like learning, I have been reading as many marriage books as I can. I started with The Secret Lives of Wives, which was TERRIBLE. Then I read The Five Languages of Love, which was FANTASTIC. Yesterday I picked up another book from the library, so we'll see...Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17639410115664066619noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1546380038426554981.post-38694802281260606972012-02-16T18:07:00.000-08:002012-02-16T18:07:35.277-08:00Back to BloggingAfter weeks of doing all my interneting on the kindle, I FINALLY have a computer back and can blog again. While I wasn't blogging, I seriously considered stopping. This blog doesn't really have any direction and I don't blog consistently. Why do it?

But the absence of writing as an outlet was really noticeable during these past few weeks. I found myself missing blogging. I figure I do it for myself, to have a place to express myself. It almost fills the void of not having girlfriends in town.

So I'm going to continue. And the blog might not have a reason or direction and might just be about random things I decide to write about on any given day. And I'm OK with that. And maybe some day I'll focus a little more, and maybe I won't. And it'll be fabulous.Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17639410115664066619noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1546380038426554981.post-8417984591870657822012-01-23T05:11:00.000-08:002012-07-06T05:32:43.052-07:00Sunday Weigh-In (a day late)I'm doing my Sunday Weigh-In today because I hate trying to blog on the kindle and figured I'd just wait until I got to work.

Yesterday morning when I hopped on the scale I weight 159! This wasn't that big of a surprise because I've been there for a few days (the Saturday date night to Tavola didn't help either) but it's still so exciting to make progress. I'm starting to see the difference in my clothes and starting to fit into some of my old stuff! A few more pounds and I'll have to stop wearing some of my clothes.

The best meal of the week had to be dinner at Tavola. HB and I split the burrata with pesto and sun dried tomatoes and I had the breaded eggplant with marina, ricotta, and mozzarella (my usual). It was fabulous and a nice treat after not having dairy at all this month.

I can feel the difference after one night of not eating perfect though. I've been feeling so energetic and healthy but Sunday/today I feel a little bit run down. I think I'm battling a cold but I'm also blaming the food. Back to salads and fruit today!Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17639410115664066619noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1546380038426554981.post-22386934541396191722012-01-18T06:02:00.000-08:002012-07-06T08:50:25.540-07:00Goodbye Spinachmobile

My car and I have a lot of fond memories together. It was the first car I owned, and I feel like when you are young and don't have a place of your own, your car becomes your "place." This was the car I drove up to college with my mom in. This was the car that I sat in overlooking the beach smoking cigarettes with friends (don't worry, I don't smoke anymore!). The car my cat and I drove across country in. This car has driven from San Diego up to Seattle, from California to Virginia.

I also feel like it signals a change for me in my life. If we decide to have kids, the car we buy today will probably be the car I cart them around in. As an adult, I probably won't put a bunch of bumper stickers on the back. The new car won't be just my car to pick the style I like but a car we both like. It's the official end of me being young and reckless, the last thing I have from that part of my life (except the tattoos, which are there for life).

So goodbye Spinachmobile. That coupled with our car breaking down and an extremely busy work week has left little time for blogging...or exercising.

The giant blister on my foot isn't helping either.

Thankfully I kept my calories low and I'm down to 161 for a total weight loss in the past two weeks of five pounds. I'm starting to see the weight loss and it is so exciting. Only a few more pounds and I'll be able to start wearing clothes that have been stuffed away for years.

Something strange did happen last night. I decided to make carrot cake for HB (I am still trying to fatten him up) and had a slice to treat myself. And I felt super sick and gross after. I used to be such a sweets person bit these past two weeks of eating whole foods have lessened my sweets cravings a bit. I'm excited that the cravings have subsided but sad to say goodbye to cheesecakes for breakfast.

My breakfast this week consisted of oatmeal with blueberries. Simple, easy, filling, healthy.

My favorite dinner was pizza! HB and I made homemade dough and each made out own. His had mozzarella, garlic, olive oil, goat cheese, bacon and potato (we don't use marinara). Mine had garlic, goat cheese, spinach kalamata olives, artichoke hearts and leftover roasted Brussels sprouts. Delicious!Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17639410115664066619noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1546380038426554981.post-5022494032086130242012-01-08T06:00:00.000-08:002012-01-08T11:41:36.426-08:00Sunday Weigh-inToday is Sunday, and marks a week that I've been counting calories and exercising. Ok, maybe just counting calories. I only made it to the gym twice this week between my schedule and the crowds of people who also want to get healthy.

As of today I weight 163.5, which means I'm down 2.5 pounds. I suspect most of that is water weight because I lost it within the first two days but it still gets me closer to my goal.

My biggest challenges this week were decreasing my food intake and making time for exercise. I was used to eating so much more that the first few days I was pretty grumpy. I was also pretty resentful - I wanted cheesecakes and cookies. But now after a week I'm becoming a little more satisfied with my healthy food options. Im still hating salad but I had some really great meals this week!

Best Breakfast
1/2 cup grapenuts
1/2 cup light sky milk
1/4 cup strawberries

Best Lunch
1 piece whole wheat toast
1/2 an avocado
2 egg whites (scrambled)
Top with sauteed spinach and mushrooms
Salsa

Best Dinner
Turkey lasagna, but I substituted the cheese for a layer of zucchini and squash.

Making the time and finding the energy to exercise more is going to be my biggest challange. I need to find the motivation to exercise from home on the days that the gym is full. I'm not going to reach my goal unless I devote some time to that.

Hopefully next week ill have more yummy meals to report.Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17639410115664066619noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1546380038426554981.post-1300808185889719702012-01-05T15:24:00.001-08:002012-07-06T05:34:22.252-07:00December BirchboxOur computer is broken, so I'll be posting from my new kindle. They won't be pretty, but it's better than nothing.
Birchbox was late sending out boxes so I didn't get mine until December 31st. Some things I loved, some I hated.

Harvey Price Yogini
This scent just isn't for me. Way too earthy. I had HB smell it (he's the one who has to smell me...) and he vetoed it right away.

Jouer Mousturizing Lip Gloss in Birchbox Pink
I love love love this. I'll be purchasing it when my sample runs out. The color is bright and fun...perfect in this cold gloomy weather. Because it is sheer, it'll look good on anyone.

L'Oreal Professional Mythic Oil
This stuff made my hair soft, but my hair is really healthy already so I don't see the point of investing money in great products.

Befine Gentle Cleanser
This stuff sucks. It's just liquid so it falls through my fingers before I can get it on my face. It smells great but that's the only plus.

I haven't tried the Showstoppers Design Fashion Tape yet but will soon. The EBOOST Orange Natural Energy Booster was too gross for me. I hate that kind of stuff.

So there you have it! Cant wait for my next box and stay tuned for how I'm doing with my diet so far.Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17639410115664066619noreply@blogger.com0
