Cooking and the Modern Day Family

Yesterday my husband and I were watching Take Home Chef. We don't normally watch a lot of TV, but they are on Netflix and are great to have on in the background. During this particular episode there was a woman who had never cooked a meal since her and her husband had been married. She said that she "didn't cook" but "heated up food." I understand that this is the norm nowadays. Between work, family time, hobbies, the gym, etc., how are people supposed to find the time to cook?

The problem I had with this woman is that she was a nutritionist! How can she make her job telling other people how to eat nutritiously and make smart choices when she doesn't know how to cook at all herself. I understand that you can make smart choices with prepackaged food, but with so many preservatives is it really as healthy as simple, fresh foods? I was shocked.

Of course, this is coming from a person that DOES cook a meal from scratch every night. I realize for most people that isn't a possibility. By cooking every night it means that I don't always have the time to read or exercise after work. But I don't see why people can't make the time for it at least a few times a week. Food is one of the many pleasures in life - and it doesn't come out of a can.
