Why I Will Never Eat a Mango Again

Lately I've been trying to lose weight. To do that, I've been trying to eat healthier and exercise more. Last week at Walmart I decided to stock up on more fruits and veggies for me to snack on on during the week. They had a TON of fresh, cheap mangoes so I, of course, bought one.

Later in the week I needed a snack and ate the mango.

Then Friday morning I woke up and my lip felt tingly. I looked in the mirror and it looked like poison oak. Obviously, it couldn't be poison oak, right? I had just had some oatmeal with cinnamon in it (it helps boost metabolism), and I don't eat cinnamon often, so I thought maybe I'm having an allergic reaction to cinnamon! I cancelled all my plans for the day and took a couple benadryl, hoping that the reaction wouldn't spread to my throat.

A few hours later I had an even more swollen, tingly lip. The benadryl had only made me woozy but no effect on the lip. At least I knew my throat wasn't going to close up. So I started researching what on earth it could be.

Lip herpes (ewww)? No

Allergic reaction? Maybe

Hives? Possibly

And then I found on a website that people sometimes get rashes from eating mangoes. How? Well apparently the same thing that is in poison oak/ivy/sumac is in mango sap. It can get on the skin, in the pit, and in the pulp near the skin. Sometimes people can get a similar reaction if they get a rash from poison oak.

I get really really bad poison oak rashes.

I wake up this morning and my lips are huge. But only my lips. It is sooooooo gross! I've have mango before and been fine, but I'll never risk it again. It's supposed to last for days and I'm really hoping that one of the jobs I submitted my resume to doesn't call me back next week for an interview.

I don't know why they don't have a big warning sign near the mangoes at markets! Has anyone else had this reaction?
